Good people, the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine goes to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman who made a discovery in the genetic makeup of protein-producing mRNA, paving the way for the rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines.

It’s particularly exciting that this award goes to the mRNA researchers because a lot of people thought COVID-19 vaccine was just produced in a haste, and without regard for safety.
So much conspiracy were flying around back in 2021 (and till date) to the extent that many began to reject or query beneficial applications of science and drugs targeted at cure , prevention or disease management.
Now, you can see that the work has been going on in that niche for decades. A member of the Nobel Assembly says work has been going on since 1991.
Drew Weissman and Katalin Karokó shared the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discovery that the nucleoside base of mRNA can be modified, making it possible for the development of effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19 at a faster pace.
When we were asked to predict the winner for 2023, I opined that researchers who gave us the malaria vaccines deserve the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
Hopefully, they will be recognised once the impact of the malaria vaccine has been determined at scale with reduced mortality and clinical cases are KPI.
