WHAT IS POINT OF CARE TESTING?
Point of Care Testing (POCT) is the delivery of fast, accurate medical tests by a trained personnel using appropriate technology at the place and time of care for various purposes such as screening, preventive care, diagnosis, monitoring or staging of a disease. POCT is also called near patient testing (NPT).
According to the World Health Organisation, near patient testing is crucial in providing access to over 80% of the African population (and the rest of the developing world) who currently lack access to essential diagnostic tests.
Because of a lack of access to testing, diagnostic accuracy in Africa is generally low. In Nigeria, diagnostic accuracy at about 36%, according to Primary Healthcare Performance Initiative funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
