Pharmacist Biodun Adediran, a Community Pharmacist based in Ikorodu Lagos State, shared a significant experience regarding mRDT (malaria rapid diagnostic test) outcomes in his pharmacy. He expressed that mRDT as a Point of Care Testing (POCT) has often been contentious but credited his shift in perspective to attending Master Classes and graduating from Global Masters Institute (GMI) in POCTs.
Adediran stressed the importance of careful patient examination and securing patient consent for various POCTs, including Blood Sugar, Blood Pressure, mRDT, and PCV. He highlighted a common issue in pharmacy practice where patients might not acknowledge negative mRDT results, emphasizing the need for patient engagement.
However, in a recent incident, a patient consented to mRDT, and within 15 minutes, the test displayed positive results. Adediran immediately provided appropriate treatment, offering ACT (Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy) and other necessary medications. He underscored the significance of strictly adhering to manufacturers’ instructions and the diligence of healthcare providers in conducting POCT.
Enrollment is ongoing for Batch 3.0 Point of Care Testing Certification Programme at Global Masters Institute (GMI), the authorized partner of Skills Development Council Canada.
