The Nigerian Federal Government has announced its plans to establish a National Biomedical Engineering program aimed at resolving the longstanding deficit in the maintenance of medical equipment in the country. This initiative was revealed by Prof. Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, following his visit to the National Hospital in Abuja. During the tour, Pate acknowledged the challenge of ageing medical equipment in the hospital, some of which have been in use for over 20 years.
These ageing machines encompass vital equipment, such as those used in cancer care and radiology, many of which are outdated, dysfunctional, or in need of replacement. Notably, this issue isn’t unique to the National Hospital in Abuja; similar challenges exist in other tertiary hospitals throughout Nigeria.
To address these concerns, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare plans to launch a National Biomedical Engineering program. This program will be instrumental in addressing the maintenance deficit, ensuring that healthcare facilities have access to functional and up-to-date medical equipment.
Furthermore, Prof. Pate touched on the issue of power supply in healthcare facilities. He expressed intentions to collaborate with the Ministry of Power and power-holding companies to prioritise healthcare facilities, ensuring they receive a consistent power supply.
Efforts are also underway to assess the needs of all teaching hospitals for the potential implementation of solar power solutions. This alternative energy source is being explored due to the high cost of diesel, which has been a traditional power source for many medical facilities.
During his visit, Pate commended the National Hospital’s management for their commitment to treating emergency patients during the first 24 hours, regardless of payment. He assured the hospital of his support and emphasised the government’s dedication to improving healthcare and the well-being of Nigerians.
The Coordinating Minister’s visit to the National Hospital in Abuja is part of a broader assessment of federal hospitals across the country. The government aims to reposition these institutions to provide high-quality services, with patients at the center of their efforts. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare services for all Nigerians.
