Uzoma Chioma Asagwara, a nurse originally from Abia State, Nigeria, has been sworn in as the new Health Minister and Deputy Premier of the Province of Manitoba in Canada. This appointment marks a significant milestone in her remarkable career and also represents a historic moment, as she becomes the first black individual to hold this position in Manitoba.
Asagwara made her debut in Canadian politics when she was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in 2019, a historic achievement in itself. She was the first non-binary and gender non-conforming MLA in Manitoba and one of three Black MLAs elected in the province’s history.
Before entering politics, Asagwara worked as a full-time psychiatric nurse specializing in mental health and addictions. Her rise from a nursing career to a prominent political position is a testament to her dedication and commitment to public service.
The announcement of her appointment received recognition and praise from various quarters, including Nigeria. Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, celebrated Asagwara’s success, describing it as an inspiration to Nigerian youth who aspire to achieve their dreams and utilize their talents.
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election, also extended his congratulations to Asagwara. He attributed her achievement to hard work, commitment, and dedication to her responsibilities, emphasizing her as a role model for Nigerian youth. He wished her success in her new role and encouraged her to continue her contributions to societal progress, both in Canada and Nigeria.
Uzoma Chioma Asagwara’s remarkable journey, from her nursing career to a pioneering role in Canadian politics, stands as a testament to the potential for success through dedication and hard work, inspiring many, particularly the youth, to pursue their aspirations diligently.
