Oyo State College of Health Science & Technology Students Charged to Provide Evidence-based Healthcare Through Point of Care Testing

During a session at the Oyo State College of Health Science and Technology, Eleyele, Ibadan, Akindele Opeyemi delivered an impactful talk to final year students of the Community Health and Extension Department. He emphasised the pivotal role they play in enhancing essential diagnostics within their communities.
Akindele urged the students to recognize the significant impact their individual actions can have on improving patient outcomes. Stressing the importance of healthcare practitioners’ knowledge, he highlighted that patients’ benefits heavily rely on their expertise.
Addressing over 100 students, Opeyemi underscored the need for health practitioners to make informed decisions based on evidence, emphasizing the relevance of Point of Care Testing (POCT). He emphasized that Community Health Practitioners could manage up to 80% of health issues, citing ‘diagnostics’ as the missing link.
Highlighting the availability of technology, he encouraged the students to utilise essential diagnostic kits for various tests such as Chlamydia, Syphilis, Hepatitis, HIV, and Genotype at Point of Care Testing, stressing the convenience of conducting these tests anywhere and anytime.
Opeyemi’s session aimed to inspire these future healthcare providers to recognize the pivotal role of diagnostics in their practice. By embracing essential diagnostics and POCT, these students are poised to significantly impact healthcare delivery within their communities.
