In a pivotal address on the 63rd Independence Day of Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to democracy, progress, and unity. As both the President and a fellow Nigerian, he highlighted the importance of acknowledging the sacrifices of Nigeria’s founding fathers and the shared responsibility of every citizen in building a prosperous future.
President Tinubu emphasised that Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity, with citizens bound by a common aspiration for peace, prosperity, and justice. He acknowledged the challenges the nation has faced in its journey but stressed that Nigeria’s resilience has prevailed, and it will continue to do so.
Reflecting on his promises upon assuming office, President Tinubu discussed the necessary reforms to modernise the economy, including the end of the fuel subsidy. He acknowledged the hardships faced by the people but asserted that reform is essential for a brighter future where the nation’s wealth is equitably distributed.
To alleviate the burden on families and households, President Tinubu outlined several initiatives. These include a provisional wage increment to enhance the federal minimum wage, an Infrastructure Support Fund for states to address rising food prices, and the introduction of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to reduce transport costs and fares.
President Tinubu also discussed ongoing efforts to reform the Central Bank and ensure monetary policies benefit all citizens. Wise tax policies, investment funding for enterprises, and an expanded cash transfer program for vulnerable households were highlighted as key components of his economic agenda.
Addressing security concerns, President Tinubu praised the efforts of Nigeria’s security forces and pledged to equip them adequately. He also affirmed his commitment to appointing officials in accordance with the Constitution, with a focus on inclusivity for women, youth, and the physically challenged.
The President expressed gratitude to the National Assembly, the judiciary, civil society organisations, and labour unions for their roles in Nigeria’s democracy, emphasising the importance of unity, courage, and compassion in shaping a better Nigeria.
In conclusion, President Bola Tinubu reiterated his dedication to serving the nation faithfully and called on all Nigerians to join in the effort to remake Nigeria into its better self. He expressed confidence in the nation’s ability to overcome challenges and wished everyone a happy 63rd Independence Anniversary.
