Tolu Ogunlesi, a former Presidential aide, has voiced criticism regarding doctors who persist in prescribing Augmentin, a widely-used antibiotic, despite its substantial price hike. His comments emerged following a doctor’s social media post highlighting the exorbitant cost of the drug.
Expressing concern over the steep price of Augmentin, which was revealed to be N57,000, Ogunlesi underscored the availability of alternative antibiotics with identical benefits but at significantly lower prices. He questioned the rationale behind doctors’ continued preference for the expensive medication, citing alternative brands that contain the same active ingredients but are ten times cheaper.
Ogunlesi emphasized the need for doctors to justify their choice of Augmentin amidst the existence of more cost-effective alternatives. The revelation of Augmentin’s increased price has sparked discussions on social media, with many expressing dismay at the soaring cost of the antibiotic.
This escalation in drug pricing has prompted questions about whether the surge genuinely reflects increased production costs or if more affordable options are being disregarded.
The ongoing online conversation is advocating for a reduction in the prices of medications, urging a reconsideration of the inflated costs that are impacting access to essential drugs.
