In a bold move, nurses at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan have taken a stand against the non-payment of their uniform allowances for the past four years. Under the umbrella of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), these dedicated healthcare professionals have resumed their duties, wearing mufti instead of their customary uniforms as a form of protest.
The nurses’ decision to wear mufti stems from the frustration of not receiving their accumulated uniform allowances for the past four years. According to an anonymous hospital staff member, the hospital’s management has failed to disburse these allowances since 2019, leaving the nurses rightfully aggrieved.
To underscore the seriousness of their demands, the nurses initially issued a 21-day ultimatum to the hospital’s management, urging them to settle the outstanding uniform allowances. This ultimatum officially expired on Tuesday, October 3, 2023. In response to the management’s failure to meet their demands, the nurses commenced work in mufti on Thursday.
Nurses working in federal hospitals are typically entitled to an annual uniform allowance of N20,000. It’s worth noting that the actions taken by the members of NANNM at UCH in Ibadan are not isolated but are supported by the national body of the association.
In a conflicting statement, the Public Relations Officer of the hospital, Funmi Adetuyibi, has asserted that the issue has been resolved and there are no ongoing problems. However, it remains unclear whether the nurses have received their pending uniform allowances or if there has been a genuine resolution of the dispute.
This bold action by the nurses at UCH in Ibadan highlights the critical issue of financial grievances faced by healthcare workers in Nigeria, particularly in the public sector. The non-payment of allowances can significantly affect the morale and dedication of healthcare professionals who are on the front lines of providing essential services.
